Chapter 12

My hands wrapped tightly around the steering wheel. I wasn’t supposed to be here, and yet, like a fool I showed up anyway. It would only take a couple of minutes—book an appointment, talk to Kristen, and head back home. No harm, no foul.

I got out of the car and convinced myself I had just cause. Even as I pulled the door open, I continued to lie to myself. The dental receptionist made eye contact. There was no turning around. I pasted a smile on my face and walked to the counter. “Hi, I need to schedule an appointment for a cleaning and check-up. Do you have something available next month?”

“Actually, I could fit you in tomorrow. We just had a cancellation, not a moment ago. Talk about great timing.”

I froze. “Tomorrow doesn’t work for me. I’m sorry, how about next month?”

“Sure,” she said, looking through her scheduling software. “Next available is in two weeks, or next month I can do most days. Do you have a day or time that’s better for you?”

“Why don’t we try for a Tuesday. Next month is better for me.”

“Okay, how about…” She scanned for a slot and put me into the calendar.

As she wrote down the information on the back of a card, I saw Kristen walking behind the counter. “Kristen! Hi, do you have a minute?”

“Of course. Give me a second, and I’ll be right out. I need to make a quick copy of something.”

“Great, thank you.” Perfect.

A short bit later, she joined me in the waiting area. “What’s up?”

“Kristen, I heard the weirdest rumor about you, and was confused. I thought it was best to simply ask you, rather than listen to the whispers.”

Her brows shot up. “About me?”

“Yes. I wouldn’t have thought anything of it, but then I saw you the other day, and remembered our conversation.”

Kristen seemed less than pleased. “What’s being said about me?”

“Well, this is really odd. There’s a rumor that you were chatting it up with Charlie Eisenhardt before he died, on a dating app.”

Her lips tightened and thinned. “What?”

“That’s why I was confused. You said you don’t know him, so when I heard the gossip it didn’t make sense.”

She pressed her arms tightly across her chest. “I don’t, technically. We’ve never met. What exactly are you asking me, Kate?”

Kristen lowered her voice to a whisper and spoke between clenched teeth. “Not that this is any of your business, but yes, we talked. I didn’t realize it was him until right before his…you know. He used a phony name and didn’t tell me who he was when we started talking.”

“I see. That makes sense. Yeah, sorry to have bothered you. It seemed really weird to hear that, especially right after you said you didn’t know him.”

“Gossip hurts everybody, Kate. Think about that before taking the bait.”

Look at her acting all holier than thou. Oh please, as if she wouldn’t have jumped on the gossip wagon if it was somebody else at the center of this mess.
